I Love You So Matcha: Guide to the Best Matcha in Chicago

Matcha is an essential part of the Mermaid Waves diet, but not just for its amazing taste.  Matcha is packed with antioxidants, literally packed.  The antioxidants in one cup of matcha is the equivalent of drinking 10 cups of green tea, because when you drink matcha you are ingesting the actual tea leaf.  Matcha contains a specific kind of antioxidant called a catechin that contains potent cancer-fighting properties.  Your girl matcha is also known to reduce anxiety due to L-theanine that is found in the tea leaves, L-theanine is known to induce relaxation without any drowsiness.  I swear it works, whenever I am feeling overly anxious, if I can't go to Soulcycle, I drink a cup of matcha and immediately feel like I can breathe again.  Matcha also boosts energy levels due to its unique blend of nutrients, not so much the caffeine levels. Plus the L-theanine helps reduce any caffeine "crash" and the mood-lifting effects can last up to six hours post matcha enjoyment.

Juicy Juice: Early 2000's Summer Inspiration

Hey Merbabes!  I haven't abandoned you, don't worry.  I have been a busy little bee working on some v v cool projects.  Obviously I will keep you babes updated on the latest in my life but today we are talking about a look, a very serious LOOK.  Before you read this post, first watch this educational video of Paris Hilton breaking down all the early 2000's trends.

My obsession with early 2000s fashions stems from the fact that although I was alive during this time,  I was barely dressing myself.  I remember jealously looking at the cool, older girls wearing itty-bitty denim skirts with their Uggs in the middle of January while I sat bundled up in my snow pants and snow pants.   From a first grader's point of view, these early 2000's trends were the epitome of fashion.  Girls like Mischa Barton, Paris Hilton, and Hilary Duff ruled the fashion scene.  In the age before Instagram, the closest thing little Dani and other girls my age had to celebrity fashion were the celebrity style books found at the school book fair.

Tweed-y Bird: How to Wear Zara like a Fashion Girl

For some people Target is their weakness, for me it's Zara.  Last weekend I went into Zara not looking to make any purchases and I walked out of there spending my entire paycheck.  Oops.  I literally stood in line with my pile of clothes, turned to Kelly and said "at least I'm not spending my money on drugs...right?".

It is kind of funny because I had shot this look featuring some awesome Zara finds and then I read this article on The Blonde Salad, "How to Shop like a Fashion Editor".   I felt pretty cool because I totally aligned with all of the editors tips.  The first trick she shares is "how not to look like a Zara girl, wearing Zara", I like to think that this is something I completely nail.  The key is really to shop smart, go for the unique, quirky pieces that can create one of a kind looks.  I think the best way to build a totally unique wardrobe is to fill it will funky fast-fashion pieces, and supplement with high-quality accessories and basics.  As a 19 year old, I am still working on building out my wardrobe and bringing my closet out of my questionable high-school days, think mini skirts and crop tops.

Graduation Gift Guide + How to Survive Your First Year in the Real World

Hey Merbabes! I can not believe this time last year I was getting ready to graduate high school.  I honestly don't remember a single thing, besides going to prom with a piece a pizza and giving a speech at graduation about selfies.  I was hashtag stressed out, I find it laughable how miserable I was last year compared to how insanely happy I am today.  I put together this rainbow-bright gift guide for the graduate / future girl-boss in your life, to congratulate them on making it out of school alive because its brutal.  Trust me.  Reminder you can shop everything by simply clicking on the item you love.

Along with this gift-guide I wanted to offer up some knowledge on your first year out of school. I didn't go to college so I can't speak much about surviving frat parties and the dining hall, but I can speak to what happens when you are no longer in school.  It seems like every corner of the internet is filled will tips for college freshman; what to pack, what to expect, life hacks... the lists are endless.  I couldn't seem to find a single guide to being a freshman in life.  Not one, so I had to figure it out myself.

Waves Don't Die: Summer Florals and Flares

Hey Merbabes!  I had the most amazing photoshoot on Monday for Sine Qua Non Salon that left me with the most amazing hair.  I had to take advantage of these crazy waves and get some shots for myself.  Before I get into this 70s inspired look, I have to take a moment to talk about how this hair was created.  Bryan from Sine Qua Non was a total genius and used wire and a flat iron to create these ziggy-zaggy waves.  First he bent a piece of wire, making a U-shape, almost like a giant bobby pin, then wove /looped my hair tightly around the wire and set it using a flat iron.  Repeat 1000 times and voila!  Two and a half hours was definitely worth it for this funky, retro look.  As you know I have no patience and will probably never recreate this look myself, instead click here for my 10 lazy girl hairstyling hack.

This look is a little flower child and a little disco, which is definitely my favorite part of retro inspired looks.  I am never trying to be 100% true to one era or type of person because I wasn't there, so I get to make it all up.  Dressing like an early '00s disney star is about as authentic as I can get with "retro" looks, you know I totally rocked the Lizzie McGuire collection from Kohl's on the first day or First Grade or maybe Kindergarten?  You get the point.

Double Denim Trouble: Photo Diary with Laudi Vidni

Hey Merbabes!  I was going to apologize for being MIA last week but I'm not going to.  It is super important to me to only offer you, my merbabe, the best content I can. If I don't have anything meaningful or inspiring to share I won't share it, to me that means, well-written, thoughtful, and purposeful. It's like when your mother told you "If you don't have anything nice to say don't say it".  I would hate for you to come to Mermaid Waves and leave feeling like you just wasted ten or even two minutes of you life.  Whether its as simple as a new way to rock your favorite jeans, or as complex as solving Instagram's new algorithm, I say complex v lightly, I only want to serve up the best of the best.  Because I am seriously tired of click-bait article after click-bait article screwing up my feed, if I see one of article titled "You won't recognize Kylie with her new hairstyle" I may explode, I will still recognize Kylie, we all will.

Anyways, today I am sharing with you a photo diary from a shoot I did with Laudi Vidni.  You may remember I worked with Laudi Vidni in the winter, see the shoot here, so I was excited to work with them again on their spring collection.

Dad Shoes: Your New 24/7 Shoe

Hey Merbabes!  My favorite style of shoe for over a year now has been the "dad shoe".   You know the shoe I am talking about.  They are easily recognizable with their thick sole, sensible color palette, and a hint of tech-nerd chic.  It is no coincidence that some of the most successful people are all known to rock the "dad shoe".  Steve Jobs rocked New Balances, the CEO of Zappos named Asics his shoe of choice.  They are power shoes, made for powerful people, like us, Merbabes.

Babes in Boston: A Mini Restaurant Guide

Hey Merbabes! Last weekend I snuck off to Boston to visit my one of my favorite people in the universe.  When I was 16,  I spent the summer at Boston Ballet, so I was quite excited to go back to this cute little city.  The majority of my time outside the ballet studio was split between eating ice cream and shopping at urban outfitters, what else would 16 year old Dani do?  That being said I was excited to rediscover Boston and see what else the city has to discover.

I had a blast with my girl and also had some seriously good eats!  Aubrey and I are both vegetarian, as well as Aubrey being gluten free and myself being dairy-free (like 95% of the time).  We have a lot of restrictions between us but we both love to eat.  Dietary restrictions really don't feel like a restriction when you know the right places to go, so I am excited to share these finds with you.

Rolling with the Homies: Salty Mermaid Swimwear

Hey Merbabes!  This Saturday's weather was what dreams are made of, so I did what any merbabe would; I threw on my favorite swimsuit, roller skates, and went to the beach.  You may recall I rocked my Salty Mermaid Suit all the way back in February, which was the last time it was warm enough to swap out my parka for a bikini.  The second I saw this weekends forecast I was ready to rock Salty Mermaid bikini #2.

Moody Thoughts and Timeless Silhouettes

Hey Merbabes!  How is your week going so far?  Mine is fa-lying by.  Throughout my school years all I ever wanted was the weeks to go as quick as possible, but now the end of the week just means there are still things on my todo list that didn't get touched.  I am a seriously productive person and have a killer work ethic, but even I have to face the facts that sometimes we can't do it all.  I blame it on ballet, I blame everything on ballet TBH, but I have a seriously hard time saying "no".  If someone asks me to do something I will always say yes; I will cover that extra shift, get the post in before the deadline, and I'll always eat the last slice of pizza.  I do love going above and beyond, duh, but often I do it because I never allow myself to say no.  Yesterday I said "no" to a very small task but I can't stop thinking about it,  I am so proud of myself.  That was a huge deal for me to allow myself to acknowledge that I am not only not the best person for the job but also that it wasn't something I wanted to be doing.

How I Simplified My Skincare Routine for Less Breakouts

Hey Merbabes!  Skin update #307 here, JK but honestly I think I am finally on to something that works.  I probably shouldn't be posting about it this soon because my skin is finally calming down and staying calm.  I don't want to jinx it, but I like sharing with you too much to keep this a secret.  As I always say all skin is different and this may not be the routine for you but if you are experiencing the acne troubles I am, you are probably willing to try literally anything.  For almost a month now I have been doing this routine religiously, yes every single day, and guess what? I have not had a breakout since.  That is crazy to me, but honestly I have probably had four new pimples over the entire month, which was what I used to wake up to daily.

Creating a Personal and Authentic Brand on Instagram: The 5 Step Guide That Doesn't Suck

Hey Merbabes! Today I am talking Instagram.  Instagram is honestly my favorite thing to talk about, so lets jump right in.  I have long struggled with Instagram simply because I feel like I know too much.  I get Instagram, I understand how to grow numbers, authentically engage with followers, all while getting hundred "likes" in minutes.   I am not telling you this to say "I am smart, listen to me", but because I have done tons of research on Instagram and honestly I am not impressed.

As a young Generation Z chick I truly believe I rule the world of social media, and know more than anyone older than me.  What 19 year old doesn't?  Instagram is ingrained in my genetic makeup, I was snapping photos for Instagram and writing witty captions while my brain was still in its crucial stages of development.  So yes, I believe I have a better knowledge of Instagram than literally any 30 year old, or even a 23 year old.

Sweat it Out: Athlesiure's Comfy Cousin

Hey Merbabes! Athleisure was the hottest word on the street for a while there, it almost seemed like we were all going to turn into legging-rocking, ponytail-sporting babes for the rest of our lives.  Do not fear, we are all still here wearing our favorite denim, and rocking t-shirts instead of workout tanks.

The 10 Minute Hairstyle That Will Change Your Morning

Hey Merbabes!  If you have read anything I have written before I have probably complained about doing my hair.  I can't tell you why I have such a hatred for styling my hair but I do.  Actually that is a lie, I can tell you exactly why.  I have so much hair, although it appears that I have this lovely manageable mane in my photos, in reality I have an abundant mop on top of my head.  I don't even try to do anything remotely fancy with my hair, all I aspire to do is leave the house with a smooth semi decent hairstyle.

Ditch Your Deodorant: Why You Should Be Charcoal Masking Your Armpits

Hey Merbabes!  I have been working with the amazing ladies at Scratch Goods, Chicago based food-grade skincare, for a few months now and it has seriously turned me into such a skincare junkie.  I am so much more aware of the ingredients that I put on my skin because 70% of those ingredients get absorbed into our bodies.  Deodorants/Antiperspirants are one of the worst products that we use.  Antiperspirant stops your body from purging toxins in order to stop your armpits from sweating.  When those toxins aren't allowed to leave the body they get trapped in the lymph nodes.  I am not here to tell you that your deodorant is going to give you cancer, I am not qualified for that but I do read enough on the internet to know that having aluminum trapped in your system is not great for your health.

You know I am all about mask-ing, it is my favorite noun turned verb, duh.  I was recently told to take a vacation on face masking (thats another story) so I had to find an alternative way to get my mask on.  That alternative is to charcoal mask my armpits.

Double Bubble: Wear Pink like a Grown Woman (Kind of Not Really)

Hey Merbabes, remember when it was 80 degrees yesterday? Yeah me too, that was cool.  Today's rain but it is the perfect excuse for me to stay inside and get tons of stuff done.  Ok so probably not tons but there is a full page to-do list sitting next to me and I need to at least make some sort of dent.

I started off my Saturday at the gym with a couple miles on the treadmill and a yoga class.  That is going to be my new Saturday ritual, I feel so relaxed and accomplished, plus I came home to an egg sandwich and homemade baked fries.  This day is off to a such a good start I can hardly be bothered by this icky weather.  The look I am sharing with you today was inspired by yesterday sunshine has some major summer vibes.

Gem Skin Care: Golden Sapphire Collection by Lionesse

Hey Merbabes! Today I am sharing with you the most chic and expensive product that has ever touched my face, ok lets be real, my entire being.  I am sure you have heard of Gem Skin Care by now and all the amazing, life changing benefits of covering your face in diamonds and pearls.  As a lover of all things extra, I aspire to put gems on my face as I imagine Paris Hilton does as part of her morning routine.

When the opportunity arose to partner with Lionesse to feature their Gem Skin Care products I was all in.  To be honest before trying Lionesse's Gem Skin Care products I could care less if they actually did anything for my skin, I was more interested in feeling like Kim Kardashian than seeing any skin improvements but I got the best of both worlds.

Confessions of a Drama Queen: Making Peace With My Pimples

I have had acne for what seems like my entire life, I am pretty sure my first acne cream was prescribed to me when I was like nine because I was so self conscious about going to school with pimples on my face.  Looking back I am sure I had one tiny red dot but for me that felt like a death sentence.  I have tried every thing under the sun to rid myself of my spots.  Literally everything.  I have been on every prescription topical, I have tried every face mask, every serum, done all the facials, yet my face is still covered in spots.  I have cut things from my diet, I have switched my makeup, my shampoo, my laundry detergents, I have made my life revolve around my acne.  I sleep, eat, and breathe acne, its on my mind all the time.  When I wake up in the morning I can sense the new pimples that have popped up over night, without ever placing a finger on my face.  When I take a bite of one of my favorite foods all I can think about is the fact that I will probably have six new pimples within the week.  I am constantly hunting for a Snapchat filter to hide my pimples or creating new hand poses to strategically cover my blemishes and its honestly getting old.  How many times can a girl cry over a little red dot on her face.  The answer is a lot, I have cried and sobbed and cried again over nothing more than my acne.

Check Me Out: Is This the Hottest Print of Spring 2017?

Hey Merbabes! It seems a little silly to be talking about the hottest print of Spring 2017 when there is snow on the ground, but here we are.  I'll be honest I am not mad about this snow, I have been waiting  all winter for this.  Better late than never, right?  Ok back to this season's hottest print, Gingham.  Gingham is such a classic but has gotten a major makeover this season.  The classic print has been placed over modern silhouettes and the results could not be any sweeter.  Although gingham comes in many different colors, the classic black and white caught my eye this time around.  These pieces can not only be paired with one another for a totally chic matching look, but can be separated and paired with your denim items for a casual Darcy's Wild Life inspired look.  I honestly am probably the only person who ever watched that show on Discovery Kids but every single time I think of gingham I picture Sara Paxton, the big city girl who moved to the country. LOL.

I have gathered my favorite gingham pieces and put together a shopping guide just for you! Remember you can shop each piece by simply clicking right on the item you want to shop.  Which pieces are your favorites? I am so in love with the booties and the trench! To die for.

Very On Brand: T-Shirt and Jeans Look

Hey Merbabe! Happy Sunday, I hope you had a killer weekend.  My weekend was both fabulous and productive and I am feeling ready to take on the week.  Yesterday I spent the day, like literally the entire day, uploading pieces from my closet onto Postmark.  Follow me on Postmark (@mermaidwaves) to shop pieces directly from my closet! Today, I started my morning off with a ballet class and now I am here writing to you and about to enjoy some lunch!  Leftover pizza topped with an egg is on the menu at our house.  If you have never thrown an egg over leftover pizza you are missing out, it is the perfect brunch creation.  I am not sure what the rest of my day holds but I am hoping it includes catching up on America's Next Top Model.  I accidentally saw a headline that named the winner while scrolling through Facebook so now I feel obligated to watch it as soon as possible.

Treat Yourself: George the Salon

Hey Merbabes! In my last post I mentioned that I was heading off to the spa, now I am here to tell you all about it.  I went over to George the Salon for a little pampering, to be honest my brain has been so all over the place I couldn't even remember what my appointment was for.  Luckily the ladies at George the Salon in Gold Coast had their lives I little more put together than I did.  I was in for a facial, perfect.

Slip into Something More Comfortable: Sequins for Daytime

Hey Merbabe! How are you today? I am feeling pretty fabulous considering I am about to eat some vegan sloppy joes (recipe by minimalist baker), then later I am heading to the spa for some pampering.  My body currently feels like a potato chip so I am excited to relax a bit and hopefully de-crisp.  LOL.  I am all about treating yourself, like all the time.  Treating yourself doesn't have to be expensive or fancy, although it can be 😏, one of my recent favorites is soaking in a hot bath with a face mask on.  The face mask completely ups the relaxation level.  This week I also tested out a very chic golden sapphire mask that I will be sharing with you later this month, yay!

This look is one of my favorites of recent, I love when an outfit just comes to me.  Usually I sit on the floor of my closet looking up at the hundred of pieces clothing, thinking that there is not one outfit to be created in that whole mess.  This look just seemed so natural, all the pieces work together perfectly and create a killer look.  This look is also pretty fabulous because it is perfect for this awkward transitional season period and can be worn from day to night.

Play It Cool: Easy Winter Weekend Style

Hey Merbabes!  I am back with some new looks for you (yay!), I am going to be sharing more of the looks I wear on the reg.  Of course I wear everything I share on Mermaid Waves, I'm not a poser, but I am going to be sharing what I wear to brunch, to Whole Foods, and to do other mundane daily tasks.  Honestly though, no task is mundane when you make everyday a fabulous, fashionable celebration, and thats how I like to dress.  This looks are anything but ordinary, yet simple enough to rock on the daily!  Think of your favorite It Girls - Kendall, Bella, etc; they always look insanely chic in every single shot in the Daily Mail snap story, whether they are in sweatpants or in couture.  That is not by accident, nor a result of amazing genes (which they obviously have), its about knowing how to rock that effortless, cool-girl look.

Locks of Love: Personalized Hair Care with Function of Beauty

Hey Merbabes!  I am so hyped to share my latest find with you, it may be due to the extreme amount of matcha I have consumed today, but this brand is seriously amazing.  I decided to treat myself today (because its FAT TUESDAY my favorite holiday) by stopping at Starbucks and getting a matcha.  A matcha at Starbucks really means a huge plop of matcha powder in ice water, but there is just something about it.  I order matcha powder made with water and that is literally what you get, it doesn't need milk or sweetener, its perfect on its own.  It is like my version of a Big Mac, so bad its good.  Disclaimer: I have never had a Big Mac and can not confirm that a Starbucks matcha is anything like a Big Mac but in my mind that analogy works.   I am currently seeing stars from the amount of caffeine I have consumed so hold on tight because this post will probably have a lot of CAPS LOCK and exclamation points. YAY.

SALE ALERT: The Final Days of Nasty Gal

Hey Merbabes!  Nasty Gal is in its final days, which is seriously sad.  Nasty Gal has long been a source of fashion inspiration for me, it is a brand that I and so many girls could relate to.  My love for the brand has grown since reading #GirlBoss and getting a behind the scenes look at the hustle and passion that went into the brand.  To be honest I have ready about 10 different articles trying to figure out what is going on with Nasty Gal but I can't.  It seems that Boohoo bought Nasty Gal and all of Nasty Gal's intellectual property will go to Boohoo. Whatever that means, it seems the Nasty Gal's future will be very different than its current existence.
