New Year Improved Me: My Personal and Professional Goals for 2017

Hey Mer-babes! We made it through 2016, what a year! Personally it has been the best year of my life.  I graduated high school, and have been able to transition into doing the things I love full-time, instead of as a hobby.  In the few short months I have been full-time living my own life I have done more amazing projects than I have my entire life.  Not being tied down to a schedule has been really difficult for me, I loved hearing that bell ring every 45 minutes and knowing it was time to switch classes, but I am loving the challenge.  It forces me to find time for the things that are important to me, such as getting in to that early Soul Cycle class, or taking time out of my day time for morning ballet.  I also got to travel and see some new places, some that I loved and some that I didn't love, both being equally important.  My blog has grown faster in the past four months than in its three year existence and I couldn't be more proud of myself.

Happy happy 2017 my loves and may it be the brightest yet! Keep reading for my personal and professional goals for 2017, and the hottest posts of 2016.

I love putting together New Years Eve outfits, it is the one time of year where normal people dress like we do on a regular basis.  Sparkles, sequins, shine, and of course velvet are the building blocks of a killer New Year's Eve look.  I paired to off the most popular silhouettes this season, the off the shoulder top and bell bottom pants to create the ultimate New Year's Eve party look.

Golden Birthday Celebration: Pizza Party Photo Diary + #19onthe19 Playlist

Hey Mer-babes! I just could not wait a moment longer for the Golden Birthday Celebration to begin! The first of the birthday series is a photo diary from my latest shoot along with a playlist!

This shoot was such a dream come true, and my biggest project yet.  I had so much fun putting this shoot together as it took on all my favorite things: gold, birthdays, and pizza. I made the mood board, found the space, and styled the looks, not bad for a barely 19 year old.  As always, this was a family matter so I have the thank my father for gathering 19(I wish I could capitalize numbers) pizzas, and my mother for taking these amazing pictures.

For this first look I went with something more casual than my everyday street style looks.  This look is my take on the it-girl / model off duty look, think Bella, Kylie, Kendall, etc.  A good pair of boyfriend jeans and a cute sports bra can go a long way when paired with fun props like balloons and pizza(s).

Pro tip: pizza is the ultimate Instagram prop, you literally can not look bad while holding a slice.

For my birthday I am bringing you all kinds of fun exclusive content.  This post includes my #19onthe19 playlist featuring a song from each year from 1997 to today.  Except for 2006, that year got two songs because "Unwritten" vs "Sexyback" was a tie I was not willing to break.  This playlist was so much fun putting together; "Complicated" by Avril Lavigne was my favorite song of all time and was one of the first CDs I owned.  Then, I realized that it was from 2002, LOL, clearly I was quite the angsty five year old.  "Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani was my life in 2005, I had the Gwen Barbie doll and I swear she is the reason I have blonde hair today.  I feel very blessed to have been born in the year that "Wannabe" by the Spice Girls was topping the charts.  Listening to some of these songs now makes my ears want to bleed but the memories are just too good not to relive.

Listen to the playlist and let me know which songs were some of your favorites and which ones I missed!

Shake Your Pom Poms: Rock this Piece to Every Holiday Party

Hey Mer-babes!  Birthday week starts Tuesday and it will be kicking off with a crazy-amazing photoshoot.  After that the madness begins, its my last birthday as a teenager, THANK GOD, and we are going to celebrate!  Be sure you are following along on Snapchat (danimikay) and Instagram stories (mermaidwaves) to get the first look at the golden birthday celebration.

Now onto the good stuff, like this sweater.  This ASOS sweater dress (shop here) is everything you need this season, and so much cooler than your average ugly Christmas sweater. .  From Ugly Sweater parties to baking cookies to every other assorted holiday gatherings, you will be the center of attention.  I am obsessed with the movement and dimension of this sweater dress, bye bye boring knits.  You can shimmy and shake and your pom-poms will move with you! You can make this sweater dress work for so many different occasions depending on how you style it.   I went with a flirty fun look with a pair of over the knee boots (shop here) and a velvet choker (shop here).  These over the knee boots (shop here) have definitely been my favorite shoes of the season, the taupe color is so versatile and much softer than the average black boot.

I kept this look super simple to let my pom-poms do the talking but you could pair this sweater dress with a chunky knit scarf (shop here) or accessories of your choosing.  For a more casual day time look you could swap out the bare legs for a pair of jeans in you style of choice, flares for me obvi.  I have yet to try to put a coat on over this sweater so that will a bit of an adventure. But looking this good is worth a little chill!

What holiday parties are you heading to this season? I am heading to none (LOL) so I have lots of time to help you get ready for yours!  You can always message me on Snapchat with questions you have or any looks you want to see on Mermaid Waves.

Make a Run for It: New Balance Chicago

Hey Mer-babes!  I am so excited to share with you my latest Chicago gem,  New Balance Chicago.  Yes, you read that right!  New Balance Chicago is family  run and has five locations across the Chicago land area.  I made my way over to the New Balance store in Lincoln Park for a shoe fitting.  As a ballet dancer I have had many pointe shoe fittings in my life time but had never had one that came close to the depth of this fitting. Seriously, the people in the store are so nice and accommodating I highly recommend you head in if you live in the Chicago-land area.  I literally had such a fun experience buying running shoes.

First I got measured for size, I am usually between a 5.5 and a 6, which was the case at New Balance as well.  Then, I hopped up on the foot scanner which showed my V high arches, a proud moment for any dancer.  After the scan, I did a walking test to show my fitter how my feet moved when I was walking as opposed to standing still.  For me my main issues was the flexibility of my feet, high arches and flexible ankles allow your feet to wobble around without much restraint.

No sweat because New Balance had the perfect shoes for my needs with had so many options.  I was first drawn to the lifestyle shoes, more relaxed fits for everyday wear.  They had shoes that were super chic and on trend, even ones that sparkled!  Even though I was drawn to those shoes I wanted to try on a more classic running shoe that New Balance is known for.  Being the old lady I am I of course chose their original model from the 80s, the 990 (shop here).  I literally fell in love, my aching feet actually stopped hurting for once in my life, I had to have them.  I love the classic silhouette and I love that they look like a New Balance, they aren't trying to be something they are not!

With my new kicks (shop here), I paired these New Balance leggings (shop here).  These leggings are so comfy I am wearing them as I am writing this post.  I love the thickness and texture, it makes them super flattering and more importantly warm.  I added a simple black jacket (shop here) and pom-pom hat (shop here) for a sporty-chic vibe.

Head to the bottom of this post to enter to win a shoe fitting, free pair of New Balance kicks, and a gift card to shop! PLUS in case you don't win the contest, which you totally will, you can receive $10 off your next purchase by using code #NEWBALANCECHI10 in stores.

Mixing Animal Prints While Staying Chic: It Is Possible

Greetings Mermaids, Happy December!  Who else is a Sagittarius babe?!  I am just living for this month so far. Ok, so its the second day but just go with me on this one.  I have been working on some very exciting projects coming soon to Mermaid Waves and want to spill the big secrets so bad.  For now all I will tell you is its my golden birthday on December 19th and we are all going to be celebrating!  Be sure to sign up for my email list (on the right side bar) to stay updated and follow me on Snapchat (danimikay) because thats where I share all my news first!

It just got real cold real quick and my body is in shock.  Its 40 degrees today but its going to be forty degrees colder AKA zero degrees in less than a month.  Dressing cute when all you want to do is wear your entire bed out in public can be difficult, I know.  When you look good you feel good, and when you feel good the god-awful temperatures seem a little bit warmer.  That actually how that full saying goes, most people don't know that.  My favorite way to stay cozy and chic in the winter is with (faux) fur.  A lot of people seem to fear furs for the same reason they fear animal prints, they have a bad reputation.  Animal prints can be really bad or really good, I agree, but if you know how to style them right, you can load up on all the prints your heart desires.

In this look I am wearing faux leather, faux fur, and faux python, that practically an entire petting zoo in one outfit; for a small girl like me that does sound a little bit crazy but its not.  I started the look with a simple base of a black turtleneck (shop here) and a silver leather dress (shop similar for $15).  People always ask me how I come up with my outfits, I usually say "IDK I just do" not because I am rude but because I just do!  It is so simple to pick out a base look and then build from there.  My next layer was these python boots (shop here on sale!), and next this vintage python bag (shop similar for $25).  The pythons are different colors completely which allows them to be paired together, no fear of clashing here!

For the last and final layer of this winter look I added my favorite faux fur coat (shop here).  This coat is such a statement piece and one of the best outerwear pieces I own.  It elevates any outfit into a super chic street style look.  In the depth I winter I love throwing it on over a pair of sweats and instantly go from sporty to sporty-chic.  So there we have, fur on leather on python! Now its your turn to take on the trend.

Candy Land: The Fashion Girl Way to Style All Your Sweaters

Hey Mer-babes! At the end of the day we are just all trying to reach fashion it-girl status am I right?  While we may not all be the next Gigi, or Alexa, or Chiara, we can dress like them.  I am all for being yourself and rocking you own style, I mean DUH thats literally why I started Mermaid Waves, but sometimes its fun to follow in the footsteps of your favorite leading lady.  For example, I was at work yesterday and a girl came in dressed sooo cute, like best outfit I've seen in a hot second.  She was rocking a beret and it totally inspired me to throw on a beret (shop similar) with my outfit today!  And TBH she was pretty rude, I knew I could rock a beret and be nice at the same time, berets and being polite are not mutually exclusive people.  That's the best part about taking inspiration from other people, you can make it your own by simply putting a smile on your face.

I am obsessed with the oversized sweaters paired with culottes look that I have been seeing all over Instagram lately so I had to try it out for myself.  It was as successful in real life as it is on Instagram. This Gap sweater (shop here) is the perfect piece to rock this winter with literally everything, its beyond soft and pairs perfectly with any piece from culottes to jeans.  With my sweater I paired blush culottes (shop similar) that I originally wore as part of a two-piece set.  I love this blush tone, and I love that I am bringing it into winter with me.  Pastel tones can be made completely winter appropriate when paired with the right pieces, like an oversized sweater.

I pulled this look together with a pair of glitter heels (shop similar).  These shoes perfectly tied together all the colors in this look.  This look is perfect for any event this holiday season.  What kinds of look do you want to see more of this season? Let me know below in the comments!

Bye Bye Boring: Instantly Upgrade Your Look This Holiday Season

Hey Mer-babes!  It is almost Thanksgiving (god bless) which means it is officially the most wonderful time of the year.  While it truly is the most wonderful time of the year it is so easy to forget about ourselves in the mix.  Between Holiday shopping and parties the next month is like a mad dash to the New Year.   All that craziness combined with the cold weather makes it super simple to get in the jeans and sweater rut.  Thats why I am here! As your fashion fairy (mermaid?) godmother.  This one piece will instantly transform your everyday look into the perfect holiday party get up.

I have had this mesh maxi dress (shop similar) for a few years now,  I found it on Black Friday for super cheap but I had no idea how to wear it.  It had no lining and former me could not figure out how on earth this dress was to be wearable but of course I bought it anyways, as the trend-spotter I am.  As you know I am living for layering this season, and I had an epiphany.  To wear the mesh dress over jeans, duh.  I have already been wearing my slip dresses over jeans so why would this dress be any different, hint: its not.   I have picked out some amazing mesh dresses for you in a widget below, some of these have slips that you can just snip out when you want to pair with jeans, or put back on when you want to wear it alone.

Styling this dress is a breeze.  I put on a base outfit of flared jeans (shop here) and a simple black tank.  From there I added my mesh dress and BAM, Holiday Party Look.  Of course no look is complete without a killer accessories squad.  I am all about texture so this pink faux fur jacket (shop here) was the perfect addition, the shaggy fur with the flare jeans is serving up major disco vibes but with a modern feel.  A block heel boot (shop here) holds it own with all the fabric floating around above it.

My sunnies are by 2 SEE LIFE which is my latest sunglass obsession.  I love these clear frames with the mirrored lens, these sunglasses can take on the feel of any look you pair them with.  You can use code DANIAM at checkout and receive a FREE pair when you buy 2 for $20! Merry Christmas to you babies!

Shop Small: Chicago's Best Local Pairings

There are few things I love more than Chicago.  The shopping, the food, and the art make me so proud to call this place my home.  Small businesses are what make Chicago the amazing city it is.  Without all of the local restaurants and retailers Chicago would be no different than any other city.  I am extremely proud that as an influencer I have the ability to support and showcase small businesses and hope that you will do the same!  This Saturday, November 26 is Small Business Saturday and I hope you will join me in celebrating at some of your favorite local spots.

Of course, I wouldn't leave you to roam the city all by yourself so I put together a guide to my favorite local spots.  These small business pairings are the perfect spots to hit up together neighborhood by neighborhood.

Over and Over Again: Revive Your Favorite Off the Shoulder Top for Winter

Hey Mer-babes! Off the shoulder tops were huge this summer and has us all feeling super sassy.  Just because the temperatures are beginning to drop doesn't mean our sass levels have to drop with it.  Ok, side note, how excited are we that it SNOWED this morning? I'm excited, a month left until my birthday (#19onthe19th) and I am hoping for a white birthday.  I am loving all the layering I have been doing this season, I am not stopping now.  Your off the shoulder top can easily be layered over a blouse to create the perfect Friends-giving look.

This off the shoulder top with the large ruffle detailing (shop similar here and here) is so wavy.  I paired it with a fitted oxford (shop here) making this the perfect holiday combination, right behind mashed potatoes and gravy.   I love the juxtaposition of the crisp white collar paired with the more bohemian silhouette on the off the shoulder blouse.  I styled this pairing with wide-leg pants (shop Kenzo x H&M here and similar here), these are the perfect holiday pants aka very pie friendly.  For a more laid-back vibe you could swap out the wide-leg pants for a skinny jean or the most pie friendly pants on the market, leggings.  When mixing patterns I tend to go towards one large and one small print as seen in this look.  The large florals on top pair nicely with a smaller geometric print on these wide-leg pants.   This top and pant came from the same KENZO X H&M collection making it super simple to rule out fears of clashing colors, like two reds that don't match, but I highly encourage you to go beyond one collection and mix pieces from all over.

Accessorizing such a bold look can seem a bit intimidating but it is so much fun.  This faux leather baseball cap (shop here) brought out the black bases throughout the look creating a seamless quality from head to toe.  Picking a bag was a breeze for this look, red and a touch of yellow means the pizza purse is coming out! Shop the pizza purse for under $50.  Not just any shoe can stand up to a wide-leg pant, I chose these block heeled booties (shop here).  Block heeled booties are huge this season and for good reason, I just had to hold myself back so hard from making any embarrassing rhyme jokes.

Thanksgiving is less than a week away and it is officially Holiday shopping season! Treat Yourself: Kiehl's Apothecary Preparations

Hey dolls! You may have noticed a new addition to my skincare routine over on snapchat (danimikay), my personalized Kiehl's serum.  Kiehl's just launched Apothecary Preparations, an in-store only service that is personalized to each individual!  First, I sat down one on one with a Kiehl's expert to discuss my skin situation.  For me, I am a little oily, a little dry and super acne prone, which is not an easy combination to combat.  We took a look inside to Skin Atlas which made addressing my specific concerns super easy,  I pointed out which photos represented my skin, photos included different degrees of texture, redness, enlarged pores, and wrinkles.  Then, I ranked my specific concerns and decided on treating my skin with the pore minimizing and brightening complex.

After the consultation is completed, I was given my customized bottle and box.  Inside the box is the Skin Strengthening Concentrate along with the pore minimizing complex and brightening complex.  The main ingredient in the concentrate is Squalane a botanical lipid that is highly compatible with your skin's natural oils.  The Skin Strengthening Concentrate is then combined with two complexes of your choice!

Once I got home I activated the serum by emptying the two complexes into the strengthening complex.   I have been using this serum for only a few days now morning and night and I am already loving it.  I haven't had a break out since, which is rare for me.   The serum goes on light and dries completely matte.   The Apothecary Preparation service makes an amazing Holiday gift, you can bring your friend or family member into the Kiehl's store so they can sit down and experience it for themselves.  It is also the perfect way to treat yourself! Head into the store, pick up some holiday gifts, get a consultation and leave with an amazing product for yourself.

I have linked some Kiehl's products below that would make amazing holiday gifts if you are unable to visit a store in person.

Pink and Pouffy: Wear Children's Clothes like an Adult.

Hey Mer-babes, happiest of Mondays.  This morning was a major struggle for me to get out of bed, the cold weather and the dark skies make it hard for even the morning-est morning person.  The best way to find some morning motivation is to think of something you're passionate about.  For me, that passion is this cape (shop here).  I got stopped all day with compliments and questions on this beauty, and I giggled to my self all day knowing where I found it.  The Target children's section, their little girl's section is honestly dreamy, full of fur vests, tulle, and pom-pons.  Children's clothes have a whimsy and playful quality that is hard to find in the real people world.

I paired this cape with some other playful pieces to create a look that will launch you out of bed tomorrow morning.  This cashmere sweater (shop here) is so much vibrant and on major sale right now!  I am not a huge hot pink person but this sweater totally changed my mind, with just a pair of jeans its adds a little pizzaz (great word) to any look.  We all know I'm obsessed with denim so I won't bore you, but just take a look at these pans.  The two-tone jean (shop here on SALE!)  is super trendy while also being incredibly flattering.  It creates a super long leg line; the dark stripe is for your legs what bronzer is to your cheek bones!  I kept this look casual and weekend ready with a pair of white converse (shop here).   A pair of pink sunglasses (shop here) and my Fitbit (shop here) also brought some fun color to this look.

In other news I can add emojis to my posts now.  I am thrilled.  😻🙆

Barbie Girl: How to Pair Bold Silhouettes with Bold Color

Hey Mer-babes!  A lot of craziness has gone down in the last 48 hours and even more negativity has been thrown out on into the world.  I am not here to comment on any of that, because honestly I don't know what say.  But I am here to bring you fun and fashionable content.  A good outfit does a lot for my personal morale, so if you need a little pick me up or even a distraction you have come to the right place.

I am back wearing Kenzo x H&M.  I saw this piece in the first collection preview and just about died.  I love finding pieces that are super chic but also look like they are made for a five year-old.  Basically, this piece checked all my boxes.  Since Kenzo x H&M has come out I have worn more zebra print than I have my entire life, zebra is definitely not my go-to print but with the bold color and silhouette of this sweater it is impossible not to love.  The best part of this top is definitely the crocheted peplum, but also maybe the oversized sleeves.  Unfortunately this piece is no longer available but this top from the collection (shop here) and this ASOS blouse (shop here) are great alternatives.  A bold top like this can easily be paired with a simple pair of black skinny jeans, but where is the fun in that?  I went for a more "Disco Barbie" vibe and paired this bold top with some other bold pieces.  By balancing out the drama of this top with some other dramatic pieces it makes this piece a little less intimidating and a lot more fun.

Light-wash denim flares (shop here) are a perfect fit for this sweater, they give this look a softness which is the perfect contrast.   A chunky heel (shop here) is the only shoe that could stand up to this look, the white heel has a mod vibe that pairs well with flares.  A candy-colored mini purse (shop similar here and here)  is such a fun way to tote around your belongings.  This multicolored bag perfectly ties in all the colors of look.

Thoughts on Instagram + My Favorite Accounts

When I was in middle school I wanted an iPhone so bad solely so I could have an Instagram Account.  I remember finally getting my first iPhone and immediately downloading the app, creating an account (@mermaidwaves since day one), and snapping my first photo with filter of course.  Instagram has grown a lot and I love it for that, back in the day I wanted so badly to get 100 likes on one of my photos to land on the popular page, 100 likes!  Today Instagram's reach and impact is so far beyond anything I could have imagined only a few short years ago.

I love Instagram an unhealthy amount, I work so hard on perfecting my little squares and take at least 100 photos before posting one.  I have no shame about it either, I will never pretend that I snap one photo and post it.  To give my feed an ounce of cleanliness, I try to edit each photo the same way.  I turn down the temperature and add the same filter to each shot.  Also, I try to vary the kinds of photos I post, a detail shot, full body, interior, etc; adding variety keeps you followers interested.

I really tried to be that person that plans out all their content a week in advance and then like a ghost just posts photos based on a schedule, but I love Instagram too much.  I love sharing an exciting moment in my life when it happens, today I voted for the first time and I wanted to share that with my followers.  I follow so many amazing people who have crazy clean, perfect feeds and that is an art, I am not shaming that at all, but for me thats boring.  I am a real person with thoughts and feelings and I want my feed to have a life behind it.  I know that the way to grow your following the fastest is to have a perfect "aesthetic" feed, but honestly, I would rather grow slowly with people who genuinely love my content and want to know what I'm wearing, or eating, or thinking.

Instagram feels so fake to me right now and that hurts my soul.  If I get one more comment made solely of random emojis or a "cool" from some robot, I may cry.  Instead of continuing to complain about Instagram I wanted to share some of my favorite accounts run by really cool real people.  This was so hard narrowing it down because I follow some crazy amazing people.  This may have to become a monthly roundup!

Zip It or Flip It: Kenzo x HM

The H&M designer collaboration comes once a year and usually all ends up on E-Bay for 800 times the original price.  But this year, it finally ended up in my closet.  Kenzo is one of my favorite designers, their use of bold color and pattern is always innovative and inspiring.  This was definitely not the year to miss out on another amazing collection, so I set my alarm early and got shopping.  Miraculously one of the six devices I had waiting on the website got through, and I got three amazing pieces that hopefully will be showing up at my doorstep soon.  I was so content, then one of my amazing followers informed me that there was still tons of merchandise in the store.   I ran (actually I walked) there immediately.  I have no idea how people had not purchased everything in sight but somehow there was tons of items still in the store, and I got to pick up one more piece. See entire collection, some is still available to shop online!

This coat is definitely the best piece of the entire collection, it is technically a mens piece so I didn't even look at it online, shame on me.  This coat is reversible, and the bottom of the jacket zips off to create a cute short bomber.  You can literally wear this coat a thousand ways, and it intend to do just that.  There are four bold patterns on this coat, it should come as no surprise that my favorite is the pink zebra.  A bold statement coat can elevate any look, I wanted this coat to be the star so I styled a super simple look to go with it.   This base outfit is my uniform from September to March.  A simple black turtleneck (shop here), paired with black flares (shop here), and black booties (shop here).  These amazing sunnies are by WearMe Pro,  I love the rectangular aviator shape (shop here), which is serving some major retro vibes.

I am jumping in a Kenzo X H&M coat.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: How to Get the Most Wear Out of Your Occasion Dresses

I love buying a new dress for each occasion, but I always feel so much guilt looking into my closet and seeing a row of beautiful dresses I have only worn once.  Your dresses deserve better than that, they deserve to be shown off and twirled around it multiple times.  The best way to make this happen is to shop smarter; when you are in the store before you purchase that perfect occasion dress try to imagine one other way to wear it.  Whether its for another season, with a different pair of shoes, or from day to night and vice-versa.  If you can immediately think of one other way to style it, chances are you will think of many more.

I wore this dress for my graduation (see the look),  I knew this dress would be perfect for so many occasions when I bought it.  The best part about a versatile dress is that it may be a little unexpected for the occasion, wearing a marble print long wrap dress is a little unusual for a graduation dress, but when have I ever done anything ordinary.  The ability for me to wear this piece two seasons later and still look seasonally relevant means it was a great purchase.

To restyle this wrap dress (shop similar here and here), I decided to go for a 70s inspired, pink, bohemian vibe.  I love pink faux fur jacket (similar here and here), it adds a little sass to any look.  I love throwing it on over a tee shirt with boyfriend jeans for an instant outfit boost.  It doesn't take a lot to revamp this occasion dress, just a different outlook! For my accessories I went with gold hoops  (shop here) and gold heels (shop similar), I love the little metallic pop to contrast the muted vibes up top.  I would just like to note that I called this fur jacket muted, LOL.   For any pink look, these pink sunnies (shop similar) are so necessary.

Target Finds: Beauty-Ful

I know I am not alone when I say that I am obsessed with Target.  If you follow me on snapchat you know that I literally snap the entire store, its just that good.  I love their active wear, their kids clothes are just beyond amazing, their bags are so trendy, and of course I could spend hours in the holiday section.  Target is basically a giant trap that I fall into every single time.

I decided to do a round-up of the best beauty finds all from Target, these finds are super inexpensive yet so on trend!  I love beauty, I love anything that will de-puff me and make my skin look and feel amazing.  These items that I have rounded up are all skin care goodies, from sheet masks to bb creams, to eye masks.  These beauty basics will have you glowing (or at least faking that glow) in minutes.   All the products in this round-up are under $35 and most are under $10!

Mask

Shop: Charcoal Mask, $3                                         Shop: Tiger Mask, $4

Charcoal is an amazing and natural detoxifier, and a sheet mask is a super simple way to detoxify.  Think of a sheet mask like a concentrated serum, it sits on your skin and works its magic then when you remove the mask, simply rub in the excess for a one-step facial.   This tiger moisturizing mask is so much fun.  Not only it is selfie magic, no filter needed, it has amazing benefits to nourish and hydrate your skin.

How to Transition Your Favorite Florals for Fall

Happy Sunday Mer-Babes!  I totally fell off the whole Halloween train this year, I'm kind of sad about it but also kind of not.  Instead of a costume post that you can only wear once a year I am bringing you something way more useful.  I feel like we are so quick to separate pieces of our wardrobe into seasons that we miss out on amazing styling opportunities.  This floral dress is one of those pieces that can easily be boxed up into one category, its spaghetti straps and floral print can make it seem like summer wear, but the velvet and navy aspects of this dress can help it work far into the colder months.

I got this dress (shop similar here and here) my sophomore year of high-school, I wish I could say that was a really long time ago but it wasn't, it was 2013.  The whole 90s obsession hadn't begun at this point, but as the trend-spotter I am, sixteen year old me knew that this dress had major potential.  The other day I was rummaging through my closet and I was so excited to find this dress, it is seriously on trend right now.  Previously, I had worn this dress on its own or with a sweater over it as that was quite hot in 2014 (see the post if you dare, but please don't laugh).  This time around I gave it a 2016 update, by layering it over a simple Madewell long sleeve tee (shop here) and a pair of over the knee boots (shop similar for only $60).   OTK boots and a slip dress is a killer combination I didn't see coming, this slit is so extra, the OTK boot tones down the leg exposure while still showing off a little thigh.  I love throwing in a piece that is a little unexpected, so I grabbed this Clare V. clutch (shop here), the light leather draws major contrast to the navy dress.  I doubled up on delicate chokers wearing a velvet (shop here) and a rhinestoned (shop here) one, of course no look is complete without oversized hoops (shop here).

I decided to change up my beauty look a bit, I traded my go-to wings for some falsies by Kiss (shop here).  I love the extra pop that false lashes give! Even though I have massive lashes theres nothing like a pair of falsies.  For my lips I am loving this matte lipstick by Ulta (shop here), it is super hydrating and had tons of pigment, I am wearing Mulberry.  For my hair, I decided the embrace the third day grease and added Triple Sec by Dry Bar (shop here) and a little styling gel.  This gave me a hint of the "wet hair" look without going overboard.

Crushing on Chokers: The It Girl Accessory of 2016

Ok so this is no surprise, but chokers are like really hot right now.  If you are like me you have basically adopted a choker as part of your neck.  If you have yet to jump on the bandwagon, I totally get you.  I hate doing things other people do, I have never read a Harry Potter book or seen any of the  movies solely based on the fact that everyone else was doing it.  But chokers are different, they aren't some strange wizard boy, they are life-changing.  Its like slipping on a layer of confidence before leaving the house, I can't tell you why but I can tell you its addicting.  With my choker on (add hoop earrings for an extra MerWaves look) I feel like the ultimate cool girl.

I have rounded up some cool girls wearing chokers, yes I included myself, to give you some styling inspiration.  From feminine and dainty to bad and bold, the possibilities are endless.  In my opinion the only time you can't wear a choker is with a turtleneck, I have tried three times now and I just can't make it work, but I'll keep trying.  Head to the bottom of this post to shop my top choker picks, most are under $20!

PS: Have you checked out the Boutique page? You can shop all my favorite finds from every inch of the internet, all under $100.  Find my favorite face mask, party dresses, and gifts for your favorite gals.
This chunky choker is the perfect way to contrast the delicate mesh and lace layers.

How to Style a Killer Look When You "Have Nothing to Wear"

Hey Mer-babes!  I have been putting lots of energy into some exciting projects outside of Mermaid Waves (read more about what I have been up to) and was beginning to run low on outfit inspiration.  Yes, even I have those days look blankly at my closet and see nothing.  I decided to start with a single piece and build from there,  I chose this babely (my new favorite word btw) mesh jacket by Happiness.  Then I took to Pinterest (follow me!),  I started going through my Street Style board and found a pin that styled a track jacket with a pleated skirt, the inspiration started to flow again!  I still couldn't figure out the middle piece, I had the jacket and the pleated skirt but I needed a third piece to bring it together.  I simply looked up "mesh jacket" on Pinterest and found a super cute photo of a girl wearing a similar jacket to mine layered over a polka-dot button up, I loved the look of the mesh over the dot print so I decided to take it on for myself.  The final look came out totally different than the original pins, no outfitter stealers here, but sometimes a little inspiration is all you need to create a totally new look!

This look is a little different than my usual, I don't usually rock skirts above the knee or polka-dots, and both in one look is basically unheard of!  This Who What Wear dotted top (shop here) is a great piece for layering, imagine the dot collar peeking out under a sweater, way too cute.  Since my legs felt a little bare in this faux-leather pleated skirt (shop here) I added a pair of sheer black tights.  I am super into tights lately, they are part old-lady and part chic which is super on brand for me.  To make my look feel a little more "me" I added my favorite black boots (shop similar), and of course my signature hoops and choker.   Also, check the "Hello Haters" sleeve detailing, I'm obsessed.
