I Love You So Matcha: Guide to the Best Matcha in Chicago

Matcha is an essential part of the Mermaid Waves diet, but not just for its amazing taste.  Matcha is packed with antioxidants, literally packed.  The antioxidants in one cup of matcha is the equivalent of drinking 10 cups of green tea, because when you drink matcha you are ingesting the actual tea leaf.  Matcha contains a specific kind of antioxidant called a catechin that contains potent cancer-fighting properties.  Your girl matcha is also known to reduce anxiety due to L-theanine that is found in the tea leaves, L-theanine is known to induce relaxation without any drowsiness.  I swear it works, whenever I am feeling overly anxious, if I can't go to Soulcycle, I drink a cup of matcha and immediately feel like I can breathe again.  Matcha also boosts energy levels due to its unique blend of nutrients, not so much the caffeine levels. Plus the L-theanine helps reduce any caffeine "crash" and the mood-lifting effects can last up to six hours post matcha enjoyment.

Juicy Juice: Early 2000's Summer Inspiration

Hey Merbabes!  I haven't abandoned you, don't worry.  I have been a busy little bee working on some v v cool projects.  Obviously I will keep you babes updated on the latest in my life but today we are talking about a look, a very serious LOOK.  Before you read this post, first watch this educational video of Paris Hilton breaking down all the early 2000's trends.

My obsession with early 2000s fashions stems from the fact that although I was alive during this time,  I was barely dressing myself.  I remember jealously looking at the cool, older girls wearing itty-bitty denim skirts with their Uggs in the middle of January while I sat bundled up in my snow pants and snow pants.   From a first grader's point of view, these early 2000's trends were the epitome of fashion.  Girls like Mischa Barton, Paris Hilton, and Hilary Duff ruled the fashion scene.  In the age before Instagram, the closest thing little Dani and other girls my age had to celebrity fashion were the celebrity style books found at the school book fair.

Tweed-y Bird: How to Wear Zara like a Fashion Girl

For some people Target is their weakness, for me it's Zara.  Last weekend I went into Zara not looking to make any purchases and I walked out of there spending my entire paycheck.  Oops.  I literally stood in line with my pile of clothes, turned to Kelly and said "at least I'm not spending my money on drugs...right?".

It is kind of funny because I had shot this look featuring some awesome Zara finds and then I read this article on The Blonde Salad, "How to Shop like a Fashion Editor".   I felt pretty cool because I totally aligned with all of the editors tips.  The first trick she shares is "how not to look like a Zara girl, wearing Zara", I like to think that this is something I completely nail.  The key is really to shop smart, go for the unique, quirky pieces that can create one of a kind looks.  I think the best way to build a totally unique wardrobe is to fill it will funky fast-fashion pieces, and supplement with high-quality accessories and basics.  As a 19 year old, I am still working on building out my wardrobe and bringing my closet out of my questionable high-school days, think mini skirts and crop tops.

Graduation Gift Guide + How to Survive Your First Year in the Real World

Hey Merbabes! I can not believe this time last year I was getting ready to graduate high school.  I honestly don't remember a single thing, besides going to prom with a piece a pizza and giving a speech at graduation about selfies.  I was hashtag stressed out, I find it laughable how miserable I was last year compared to how insanely happy I am today.  I put together this rainbow-bright gift guide for the graduate / future girl-boss in your life, to congratulate them on making it out of school alive because its brutal.  Trust me.  Reminder you can shop everything by simply clicking on the item you love.

Along with this gift-guide I wanted to offer up some knowledge on your first year out of school. I didn't go to college so I can't speak much about surviving frat parties and the dining hall, but I can speak to what happens when you are no longer in school.  It seems like every corner of the internet is filled will tips for college freshman; what to pack, what to expect, life hacks... the lists are endless.  I couldn't seem to find a single guide to being a freshman in life.  Not one, so I had to figure it out myself.

Waves Don't Die: Summer Florals and Flares

Hey Merbabes!  I had the most amazing photoshoot on Monday for Sine Qua Non Salon that left me with the most amazing hair.  I had to take advantage of these crazy waves and get some shots for myself.  Before I get into this 70s inspired look, I have to take a moment to talk about how this hair was created.  Bryan from Sine Qua Non was a total genius and used wire and a flat iron to create these ziggy-zaggy waves.  First he bent a piece of wire, making a U-shape, almost like a giant bobby pin, then wove /looped my hair tightly around the wire and set it using a flat iron.  Repeat 1000 times and voila!  Two and a half hours was definitely worth it for this funky, retro look.  As you know I have no patience and will probably never recreate this look myself, instead click here for my 10 lazy girl hairstyling hack.

This look is a little flower child and a little disco, which is definitely my favorite part of retro inspired looks.  I am never trying to be 100% true to one era or type of person because I wasn't there, so I get to make it all up.  Dressing like an early '00s disney star is about as authentic as I can get with "retro" looks, you know I totally rocked the Lizzie McGuire collection from Kohl's on the first day or First Grade or maybe Kindergarten?  You get the point.

Double Denim Trouble: Photo Diary with Laudi Vidni

Hey Merbabes!  I was going to apologize for being MIA last week but I'm not going to.  It is super important to me to only offer you, my merbabe, the best content I can. If I don't have anything meaningful or inspiring to share I won't share it, to me that means, well-written, thoughtful, and purposeful. It's like when your mother told you "If you don't have anything nice to say don't say it".  I would hate for you to come to Mermaid Waves and leave feeling like you just wasted ten or even two minutes of you life.  Whether its as simple as a new way to rock your favorite jeans, or as complex as solving Instagram's new algorithm, I say complex v lightly, I only want to serve up the best of the best.  Because I am seriously tired of click-bait article after click-bait article screwing up my feed, if I see one of article titled "You won't recognize Kylie with her new hairstyle" I may explode, I will still recognize Kylie, we all will.

Anyways, today I am sharing with you a photo diary from a shoot I did with Laudi Vidni.  You may remember I worked with Laudi Vidni in the winter, see the shoot here, so I was excited to work with them again on their spring collection.

Dad Shoes: Your New 24/7 Shoe

Hey Merbabes!  My favorite style of shoe for over a year now has been the "dad shoe".   You know the shoe I am talking about.  They are easily recognizable with their thick sole, sensible color palette, and a hint of tech-nerd chic.  It is no coincidence that some of the most successful people are all known to rock the "dad shoe".  Steve Jobs rocked New Balances, the CEO of Zappos named Asics his shoe of choice.  They are power shoes, made for powerful people, like us, Merbabes.

Babes in Boston: A Mini Restaurant Guide

Hey Merbabes! Last weekend I snuck off to Boston to visit my one of my favorite people in the universe.  When I was 16,  I spent the summer at Boston Ballet, so I was quite excited to go back to this cute little city.  The majority of my time outside the ballet studio was split between eating ice cream and shopping at urban outfitters, what else would 16 year old Dani do?  That being said I was excited to rediscover Boston and see what else the city has to discover.

I had a blast with my girl and also had some seriously good eats!  Aubrey and I are both vegetarian, as well as Aubrey being gluten free and myself being dairy-free (like 95% of the time).  We have a lot of restrictions between us but we both love to eat.  Dietary restrictions really don't feel like a restriction when you know the right places to go, so I am excited to share these finds with you.

Rolling with the Homies: Salty Mermaid Swimwear

Hey Merbabes!  This Saturday's weather was what dreams are made of, so I did what any merbabe would; I threw on my favorite swimsuit, roller skates, and went to the beach.  You may recall I rocked my Salty Mermaid Suit all the way back in February, which was the last time it was warm enough to swap out my parka for a bikini.  The second I saw this weekends forecast I was ready to rock Salty Mermaid bikini #2.

Keep reading for the complete photo diary with Salty Mermaid Swimwear.
